scattergard rule

I am curious why the scattergard rule is mandatory? Seems to me that its a rule that is trying to fix something that isnt broken. I KNOW its for safty but have never herd or seen anybody get hurt buy a ujoint in mud racing! I have talk to numourus fellow racers & nun of them think this is for the best. It is probably guna cause ujoints to go out pre maturley, not to mention the added cost to install the gard. I personaly feel this rule should be up to the drivers not the tecks. Once again I dont think U should fix something thats not broke. PLEASE reply.

For one there not guna break early if u maintain them and grease your u joint's, and I'm sure it's not guna cost you much i built mine in shop class at school. Nd finally if you were at the starting line running lights and you had a pickup with a 6in lift and a clutch would u want them dumbing that clutch right by you cuz it sure the heck wouldn't take much for one to break and come out and hit you. I've seen quite a few u joints break and it's not good. I've seen one take 1/8 inch tubing and make and egg out of it. So jus suck it up make them or don't race.

If the rain holds out for Saturdays race I will let you come up near my truck when I take off the line at 8,000 rpm you can see how the ujoints are for me.And the cost is not that much mine cost for four of them about $30.And don't have to go dig my drive shafts out of the mud.

We hear your concerns, and completely agree that this is all for fun, and we're doing our best to keep it that way. But it only takes one accident to ruin the fun for everybody. Are most of us (including board members) thrilled about putting them on? No. Is it the right thing to do? Yes. Especially when you see how much the horsepower has come up in all of the classes over the past few years. Stuff is gonna start breaking, and rule number one has to be safety. Our primary concern is preventing pieces from flying out into the crowd, and the safety of our help on the track. In this case, especially the guys at the starting line. We try to be as proactive as we can about making safety rules, and sometimes it causes some hard feelings. Take for instance the Neutral Saftey Switch rule a couple years ago. Alot of guys didn't like that at first either, but I know for a fact we've prevented some accidents with that one.

WELL SAID I would also add that there are welding shops in every town around that would be able to help with the guards. The hard part is to figure out how to fasten them. A 1/4 inch hole and bolt through the webbing area of the axle or a flat iron bent around from a bolt hole is all it takes. Most of the stuff I am hearing is that guys have not seen them so they do not know how to fasten them on. If there is anyway I can help you with this let me know. I do not see the rule changing so you need to have them.
I do not think we have ever turned away any racers yet so lets all have some fun. If anyone wants to post pics of their guards- maybe it will help give ideas of how to make them.
Thanks for using the forum to discuss the rules and as far as it being for fun that is why we have to be safe. Think about it!!!!!

Looking at the rules for each class it says only mandatory for the rear shaft!! But in the general rules
it says. also front pinion is also needed which of these is correct?Because the front pinion one is hard to build on a chevy because its so close to the oil pan and tranny cooler lines!! If any body has suggestions or picks please post them.

It means you need a rear driveshaft loop. And you need scatter guards. We put the details for the whole setup in the General Rules section, so we didn't have to repeat it in every class.
