My son and I have a 79 Ford step side with a 351 Windsor and a granny low four speed. I do not know what the gearing is in the diff's. I believe the syncros have went out of the transfer as it is very hard to get in and out of gear. I would like to put in a newer five or even a six speed transmission to replace the current four speed. Can this be done and what transfer would I want. It does not have a divorced transfer case. This is not for mud drags but we will romp around the fields so I need some durability and it needs to be dependable.

Thanks everyone!

you can use either a M5od or the Zf-5 both have bellhousings that will match. the ZF-6 has different bolt pattern which may require having a adapter plate built. if your not using this for pulling or mudding, the alum. case 1345 or 1356 will work just fine.. if you want heavier upgrade to the New idea that is in the superduty. bolts in the same and is very tuff.. have seen both the internal slave and extrenal slave systems used for this.. just takes a little fabrication..
