I am interested in finding the magic cam that will do mod stock but yet make some power in a big block chevy. I called 4 different cam companies and got 4 way different recommendations. I kinda think I have an idea what I want but thought it would be a very interesting topic to discuss. I have built several engines but never cared about the vacuum. Everybody that has a thought or advice please chip in.

I wonder myself about the vacuum deal I dont know how you determine 17 inches of vacuum without building a motor and testing it or asking someone and they ere not always correct

I think in a chevy you don't want hardly any lift and absolutley no duration at all. But that is just what I think. Maybe one of the mopar guys can help you out a little too.........

Thanks way cool Jr. You are right when you think a small cam will beat the others but I am thinking I might have to race another chevy so I am thinking I will be aggressive. LOL

I agree with JR no lift, and hardly any duration. That or tons of lift and full roller (hey, chevy parts are cheap right?). If you're going to pull less than 17, play it safe and make sure it's less than 14. ;-)

Hey Orv, how about you buy something like this, and then tell us if it's anywhere close. If it is, of course you should let all of you buddy's come over and use it.

I have used Camquest which is a free Download from compcams.com. It is really informative but it doesn't have any vacuum figures. You can play with inputs to estimate HP. It is really cool and really free. Have you played with The Virtual Dyno. I see it has a free calculator but I don't know if I should Download it or not.

They're free calculator is worth the download, it's kindof handy. It's got some ads in the calculator itself for their own products, but nothing annoying like. You won't get any popups or spam from it. I use to have an older copy of their virtual dyno. If I remember right, it gave you manifold pressures, but they weren't in inHg. Never tried converting them. I'll see if I can find where I put it.

Anyone know how acurate that camquest system is? It seems to me that it is over estimateing horse power and torque.
